The environment consists out of two main parts: ### Granular Material Box The granular material box is used as visualization tool where students can manipulate granular material using physical controllers (see below). The box itself is made out of acrylic glass which is connected using screws at its corners so that it can be taken apart easily after experiments are done. ### Physical Controllers The physical controllers are used by students as input devices where they can control e.g., density or direction forces applied onto granular material inside granular material box. #### Rotary Encoder Controller #### Button Controller ## Virtual Experimentation Environment The virtual experimentation environment was developed by [Clemens Rieder](https://github.com/ClemensRieder) during his master thesis "Developing Mixed Reality Tools For Teaching Pedagogy And Hardware/Software Collaboration In An Experimentation Environment For Engineering Students". The environment consists out three main parts: ### Visualization App The visualization app is used as visualization tool where students can manipulate granular material using physical controllers (see above). The app itself is based on Unity engine which renders virtual granular material inside mixed reality environment. ### Sensor Application The sensor application is used as input device where students can control e.g., density or direction forces applied onto virtual granular material inside mixed reality environment using physical controllers (see above). The application itself is based on Node.js which reads data sent via serial port by microcontroller connected with physical controllers. ### Microcontroller Firmware The microcontroller firmware controls communication between physical controllers (see above) and sensor application described above using serial port. <|repo_name|>ClemensRieder/etude-on-mixed-reality-in-classroom-settings-for-teaching-pedagogy-and-hardware-software-collaboration-in-a-granular-material-based-experimentation-environment-for-engineering-students<|file_sep|>/README.md # Etude On Mixed Reality In Classroom Settings For Teaching Pedagogy And Hardware/Software Collaboration In An Experimentation Environment For Engineering Students This repository contains all artifacts generated during my master thesis titled "Developing Mixed Reality Tools For Teaching Pedagogy And Hardware/Software Collaboration In An Experimentation Environment For Engineering Students" which was supervised by [Prof Dr Andreas Schenk](https://www.mavt.ethz.ch/en/people/prof-dr-andreas-schenk.html). ## Abstract In our everyday life we constantly interact with mixed reality environments without noticing it - e.g., when we navigate through streets using Google Maps or when we search for product information using augmented reality applications like Ikea Place app. Mixed reality environments are also increasingly being used as teaching tools inside classrooms especially when it comes down teaching engineering concepts - e.g., when engineering students learn how structural components react under stress loads by visualizing structural deformation using virtual reality applications like VR Architect app or when engineering students learn how structural components react under stress loads by visualizing structural deformation using augmented reality applications like Augment app. Mixed reality environments have many advantages over traditional teaching tools when it comes down teaching engineering concepts - e.g., students get immediate feedback when they make mistakes so that they can fix them right away instead having wait until next class session which helps them learn faster or even use mixed reality environments outside classrooms as additional teaching tools so that they can practice more when they want instead having wait until next class session which helps them learn faster. However mixed reality environments also have many disadvantages over traditional teaching tools when it comes down teaching engineering concepts - e.g., students need special hardware like headsets which are often expensive so that only few students can use them at once or even if they could afford one each student would still need help setting up everything before starting lessons because mixed reality environments require quite some technical know-how which most engineering students don't have yet at beginning stages but rather learn throughout courses later on once they've gained enough experience working with other technologies already such as programming languages like Python etc.. In order words there exists trade-off between benefits offered by mixed reality environments versus drawbacks associated with them namely cost issues related hardware requirements needed operation thereof along side technical know-how required setup thereof etc.. Therefore it makes sense investigate whether there exists alternative solutions capable addressing aforementioned problems without sacrificing advantages offered by mixed reality environments themselves such as increased engagement levels among learners thanks immersive nature thereof along side enhanced learning outcomes thanks immediate feedback provided thereof etc.. This thesis aims investigating whether mixed reality environments could be used inside classrooms not only just visualize engineering concepts but also teach pedagogy along side hardware/software collaboration skills required operating thereof thereby increasing engagement levels among learners thanks immersive nature thereof along side enhanced learning outcomes thanks immediate feedback provided thereof etc.. ## Contents This repository - Create an Atmosphere:
